A better brand for the bovine.
The Spotted Cow is a small, locally owned, coffee shop and micro-roaster in Mill Creek, WA. It also happens to be one of our regular haunts. A few years back, when ownership changed, we had the wonderful opportunity to handle the entire rebranding, and consequent design work.
The main problems to be solved were that the previous owners had never implemented any basic design standards and that the new owners wanted to expand the roasting business (necessitating a more respectable logo mark). Previously, everything from the packaging to the signage had disparate design choices. We made sure to remedy that.
Stuff for the customers...
After creating the main logo and stationery, we turned our attention to anything customer-facing. This included Gift & points Cards, Printed Menus, Signage, Cup Stamps, etc. The goal was to create a cohesive visual aesthetic that customers would immediately recognize as unified.
...and also for the staff.
It was equally important to us that all the staff were aware of, and excited about, the new design choices moving forward. The Spotted Cow is very tight-nit and familial, so an appreciation for our work by the staff would help make the transition from the old logo/aesthetic to the new.
We made sure to create internal documents and design pieces in strict adherence to the brand to make the new styles familiar as quickly as possible.
A splash of color.
The whole brand was designed around a strict Black & White color palette (because, you know, cows and such). There is one glaring instance where the monochromatic color scheme is broken; and that is on the packaging for the Spotted Cow’s internal roasting business.
Quickly identifying the general region a coffee is from was a huge request during the branding process. We went with a simple 4-color system as the background for the coffee labels; however this appeared overly simplistic. So in keeping with the aesthetic of “hand-done meets rigid design” we created elaborate watercolor collages as the background for each region.
Every collage features a central flora specific to the region.
Pine Trees, Mt. Rainier
Acacia Tree, Grassland
Agave, Jungle Plants
Lotus Flower, Vibrant Flowers
Signage & Interior
What’s a coffee shop without chalkboard signs?
In the effort to make sure the brand was recognized in the signage, we opted to use a local vinyl shop to create all 4 of the main menu boards. The vinyl, as opposed to a traditional chalk approach, further presented our very opinionated design aesthetic to both the staff and customers alike.
Beyond the storefront.
On top of the ongoing relationship to help steer new designers at the cow towards adhering to the brand, we are also deeply involved in the Spotted Cow’s online presence. We have worked on several iterations of their website, taking the changing business goals into account at each point.
On top of everything, we help the Spotted Cow drive new customers to their door via online marketing.
